Jim,
Charlotte, Dennis and Mike in 1991. This picture was
taken
at Charlotte's house in Los Alamos, NM. The Cerro
Grande wildfire in May 2000 was
set as a prescribed
burn by the National Park Service
at Bandelier
National Monument. High
winds blew the fire out of control,
and
into the Los Alamos town site. The fire got to within several
blocks
of Mom's house on Trinity
Drive, but her home was
spared. The only thing she lost was
the
food in her refrigerator while she was evacuated. When the wind
from
the fire shifted to Santa Fe, the city was blanketed with red-brown
smoke and you could barely see the
top of Santa Fe Baldy. The
whole city smelled like a campfire, and sometimes your eyes and throat
became irritated. These sites
have more
pictures
of the terrible
fire,
that destroyed more than 200
houses and burned
more
than 47,000
acres. Fortunately, there
was no loss of life. Property
damage and the number of houses
destroyed would have been much
greater had it not been for the
heroic
efforts of the Los Alamos Fire Department and hundreds
of other firefighters.
